During the first weekend of August, the fiancée and I made a short trip to KL to catch Jay Chou's Opus Jay concert (周杰倫 2013 魔天倫 世界巡迴 馬來西亞 演唱會). It was an advanced birthday celebration for me that the fiancée arranged.
The fiancée got the concert tour package through Five Star Tours, which started arranging for such tours since Jay's previous 超時代 world tour back in 2010. They are also one of the event organizers for Jay's Malaysia concert.
We departed on 02 August 2013, 08:00AM from the Golden Mile Complex. I believe that everyone on the trip were heading to KL for the purpose of catching Jay Chou. Many, I believe, did not manage to get tickets to Jay's Singapore concert in June, which sold out in 2.5 hours upon going on sale. I was lucky enough to get tickets to the Singapore leg of this tour thanks to Reene, a friend of mine I made through the old JCNet days. (Thanks loads, Reene! Forever grateful!)
As this was an overseas trip, naturally, these two little fellas tagged along:
The blue nomster has been following me on my trips since I went on exchange studies in London in 2010, while the awkward penguin follows the fiancee around (we call him 東東, he even has his own Instagram account).
We caught the final night of Jay's concert in KL on 04 August 2013, 08:00PM. We heard from the tour guide lady that there were only two bus loads of Singaporeans for tonight's concert, as opposed to Saturday's concert, where there were four buses.
The tour bus picked us up from the hotel lobby around 05:30PM. We arrived at the Bukit Jalil Putra Indoor Stadium around 06:00PM.
As we arrived two freaking hours before the concert, we were initially worried that we would be bored out of our minds. No one arrives this early for a concert in Singapore, except the hardcore fans queuing up for the merchandise.
But we were greeted with a friggin' CARNIVAL outside the stadium, unlike anything we ever see in Singapore. It's similar to what we experienced when we went to Beijing to catch 五月天 last April.
There were booths selling the official (and bootleg) concert merchandises. SOGO Kuala Lumpur, being the main concert sponsor naturally got the biggest booth.
There was also huge posters for fans to take photos with.
There was even a friggin' mobile Starbucks TRUCK! How come we don't find these in Singapore?
After walking around the carnival for an hour or so, we entered the arena. We felt that the security checks were more stringent than what we experienced in the Singapore Indoor Stadium. There was an initial check of bags at the main entrance, than another round of bag checks just before we enter the seating galleries.
This was the view from our initial seats (I'll explain later). The first thing that stuck us was that the stadium is pretty worn down compared to the Singapore Indoor Stadium, and the Singapore Indoor Stadium is built in 1987 (I wiki-ed it. Haha). So I think the Putra Indoor Stadium must be older, either that, it certainly isn't maintained as well.
Another thing we noticed was that the ticket prices (at least for this concert) were generally similar to the prices we are paying in Singapore.
We were initially seated on the second last row of the block. And our block was pretty darn close to the stage. It was priced at RM430, which works out to about S$170. For a similar category of seats, it costs S$168 (+ S$3 SISTIC charges).
We also noticed that the lyrics cue board that Jay looks at (in case he forgets his lyrics, which he often does) is much lower here.
We also realised that his stage here is elevated higher and slightly larger. There was also a GIGANTIC SPACE between the first row of the VVIP ticketed seats and the stage. I think they can easily squeeze in another 5-6 row of seats.
On every seat was a complimentary lightsaber-like light stick which says "OPUS JAY 2013 WORLD TOUR" on one side, and this on the other side:
It's pink in colour because that is Jay's favourite colour. We came dressed in red because that is the closest colour to pink we bought along for the trip (plus I can't pull off pink).
About 30 minutes before the concert start time, our tour guide came in and asked us if we wanted to be shifted to the front few rows of the block, and we were like "OF COURSE WE DO LIKE WHAT THE HECK *#&@^!!"
We are not sure what criteria they used to shift who around and what not, but the fiancee and I were shifted to THE FRONT ROW of the block with an UNOBSTRUCTED VIEW OF THE STAGE! Like how awesome is that! We were very thankful and impressed with their service because they had no obligation to do that.
We initially speculated that they were able to upgrade our seats because it isn't a full-house today 'cos it was a Sunday night and all.
But we are talking about Jay Chou here, and by 08:00PM, we were proven wrong:
There isn't a single empty seat in the arena (except for the blocks that were closed off to make way for the construction of the stage).
While waiting for the concert to begin, two music videos were playing continuously.
One was the MV for 天地一鬥, which featured NBA player Kobe Bryan, which is really just a commercial for the Sprite drink:
The other was the MV for the song 夢想啟動:
The concert started around 08:30PM, the 30-minute delay is also similar to what we usually experience in the concerts held in Singapore. I guess it was partly for the event organisers to let in as many latecomers as possible.
In short, we felt it was a more enjoyable concert experience than Jay's Singapore concert we attended in 08 June 2013. I guess it was because of our premium view and comfortable seats, as opposed to the Singapore concert where we stood throughout the entire concert in the VVIP section.
The concert review will come in the next post, so do stay tuned! The review will come with clear photos (can see his face clearly kind) and HD videos! This was all thanks to the fiancée getting me the Olympus SZ-16 camera (with SUPER optical and digital zoom).
I promise I will post it within the week! Meanwhile as a short teaser, here's Jay's Set List for that night!
